Quick Overview

First Samuel, Chapters five and six, shows how the LORD’s Hard (Kawshaw) Hand dealt with idolatry, even among the heathen. The Philistines captured the Ark of God and carried it back to their land and put it in the temple with their false god, Dagon. Dagon is a picture of perversion because this idol was fashioned into an unnatural joining of man, who was made in the Image of God, and a fish, which never was made in the Image of God.

Sermon 1433A - City of Pride in Our Unconscious Will our Inner City - 9th Message…..(Sun am 4/21/96)

The Philistines put the Ark of God on the same level with Dagon. But, in the morning, when they came into the temple, they found Dagon lying on his face before the Ark of God. However, the Philistines did not heed this warning; they simply picked the idol up and put him back in place. So, God laid His Hard Hand upon Dagon, again. This time, He cut off Dagon’s head and the palms of his hands and laid them on the threshold so that the first thing the idol worshippers saw when they went into the temple was the separation of their god. The Philistines paid no attention until God laid His Hard Hand on them and began to destroy them with hemorrhoids. Then, they decided that it was time to send the Ark of God back to Israel.

The Spiritual Principle for us to learn is this: God dealt with idolatry and perversion when the Philistines did not even want to be separated from their false god. How much more, then, will God be faithful to deal with the idolatry in our city of pride when we are crying and praying for Him to remove it?
